You can’t go canoeing without knowing the basics of canoeing and the parts of a canoe paddle. Is this important information, you ask? Of course, because knowing these basics will give you a brief guide and will teach you a little about how canoeing works.
What is a canoe?
A canoe is actually a small boat that is driven by people using a canoe paddle. Canoes are distinct boats because they have a pointed bow and stern and the top is open. Usually there are two paddlers and the speed of the canoe is determined on the type of paddle being used. Unlike rowers who face against the water, paddlers face the boat and face the direction of the current.

The blade is the mot essential part of the paddle as it determines the speed capacity of your paddle and how it controls the boat.
Kinds
Now that you know the different parts of a canoe paddle, here are the different kinds of paddles available according to water type:
Recreational – This type of paddle is used for general purposes. They are made from aluminum, plastic, or wood.
Lake water – Lake water paddles are mainly used for lake paddling and provide smooth, broad strokes. They have long blades great for deep waters. They are made from hard wood.
Whitewater – This type of paddle has short blades and with straight tips. They also have t-shaped grips for a stronger hold and to avoid slipping. They have shorter blades and Whitewater paddles are made from tough materials like wood, carbon, or fiber glass. This is designed as protection for rocks and strong current.
