The steamy rainforests in countries close to and below the equator of the earth are home to some of the most beautiful and largest families of orchids. These stunning and resilient plants can be found here in the most unusual dwellings, ranging from far above in the shady trees to down below on the forest floor. They are even found on rocks or other natural porous materials. Orchids are said to be monocots since they originate from a single seed leaf; this gives rise to their classic parallel-lined leaf appearance and petal arrangement. They exist in all sorts of wonderful shapes, sizes and colours with varieties boasting a solitary exquisite bloom to those that have many all along their stems.
The vast majority of orchids are epiphytes or lithophytes, meaning that they use tree-bark or large stones as mounts upon which to grow. They do not derive their food from these mounts, but simply use them as structural supports on which to attach themselves.
The weather in the tropics is by no means a climate that is easy to contend with. Rain-fall is often erratic, temperatures often high and sunshine often intense. Over the centuries, orchids have adapted both their survival mechanisms and their preferred habitats to be able to thrive in such a challenging place.
One of the best qualities of hot-weather orchids is their remarkable ability to manage on an extremely limited water supply. Some have developed specialist pseudobulbs which act as reservoirs to soak up excess moisture during a rainy period and keep it in reserve for when the plant needs it. Others have thick, bulky leaves which serve a similar purpose.
The roots of the orchid also form a super efficient structure which is brilliant at controlling water delivery. Healthy roots will be covered in a thin greyish sheath which is absorptive and holds on to excess moisture.
Most groups prefer temperatures in the 75 to 90 degrees F range; this means that they thrive well in their native misty habitat, but also do well in the surroundings of an average home. Most kinds do need a drop in their overnight environmental temperature and this again, occurs naturally both in the wild and inside.
Orchids are generally used to a generous amount of light, but because this illumination passes through other vegetation first, it is usually dispersed rather than direct. Orchids are very susceptible to sunburn if presented with harsh sunshine so this natural filtering mechanism serves very well to protect them from damage.
These plants are used to enjoying excellent air-exchange wherever they are situated in the wild. These breezy conditions are somewhat difficult to replicate in the home as the environment here is more enclosed but opening a window for a small part of the day can help. Using a small electric fan in particularly still atmospheres can also help to prevent problems from developing.
One of the biggest challenges facing wild orchids is the decline of the rainforests and with this, their native habitat. Although horticulturists have attempted to propagate many types in controlled conditions, there is still an ever growing number of varieties that will go into extinction and be lost forever.
If you decide to attempt to cultivate these lovely blooms yourself, it is best to try and mimic their natural environment as closely as possible. If you have the luxury of being a greenhouse owner, then all the better so as these can be perfect places with their steamy atmosphere; a greenhouse heater can be installed to boost warmth in colder countries. Wherever you decide to house your orchid, remember that it actually needs very little from you beyond the basics so just sit back, relax and watch the dazzling beauty unfold. You will be truly astounded at how easy it really is to produce something so splendid.

If I reserve a game at Gamestop that comes with something extra with a reserve will they hold it for me?
Sorry if that isn’t clear lol. But I reserved a game at Gamestop because if you do you will receive a free downloadable episode to go along with it. What I want to know if since I reserved it in January will they hold onto the code for me until I pick the game up when it comes out at the end of the month? I never dealt with Gamestop and preorders before and don’t know anyone personally who works for them or has done a reserve thing with an added bonus attached. They are closed right now and I just got off of work so I didn’t get the chance to call them but I was thinking about it so I decided to just ask here.
Well I went to their website and it said while supplies last on the reserves which is why I am curious.
They will hole both the game and extras for so long (two days I think) and they should call when it comes in
