Backhoe or backhoe loader is a piece of engineering equipment frequently used for digging ditches and trenches on construction sites. It consists of a tractor, digging bucket, front shovel and a small backhoe that is typically mounted on the back of a tractor.
Most construction companies believe that backhoe’s the workhorse of earth movers. It’s the only machinery brought onto different range of landscaping projects, because it can duplicate the job of a front loader, excavator, and bulldozer. Since the equipment is attached on a diesel-powered tractor structure, a backhoe can be brought straight to various job areas.
The General Uses
The major uses of this equipment are as follows:
- Cleaning up constructions areas (e.g. moving large loads of dirt from one place to another despite of the terrain)

- Smooth out rough terrain with the use of the digging bucket

How to Operate
The operator must learn how to maneuver a backhoe scooper and a front end loader. The loader is not as difficult as the backhoe attachment, except that the operator needs to use a joystick while driving the tractor at the same time. Either getting rid of excess dirt and material from the area or placing it back in the hole (or known as backfilling) is the job of the front end loader. The front-mounted bucket is also capable of compressing loose-fitting soil.
The backhoe attachment is difficult to learn. It is where the operator’s experience and skill is needed. The stroke of a backhoe is akin to a human extending and drawing back sand at the beach, only that humans carry out this task through muscle memory and impulse. Backhoes use three joints to duplicate the action. One joint extends the whole arm out to the part to be dug. The next joint (analogous to elbow) does the flexing and curling to draw the bucket back. Finally, the last joint (analogous to wrist) does the pushing and dragging of the bucket through the soil. These joints are power-driven hydraulic pistons, and managed by handles within the tractor compartment.
A Guide to Buying
To avoid buying the wrong machine for your particular needs, you need to carefully choose the right backhoe. Here are some pointers in buying a backhoe.
- You should decide if you need a backhoe, a mini excavator, or a skid steer loader. A backhoe has more power than compact machines but lacks the expense of full-sized excavators.
- You should know how deep you need to dig. A compact backhoe can reach down 8 to 10 feet deep but full-sized backhoe can dig up to 14 to 16 feet.
- Ensure that the loader has enough lift height to load dump trucks.
- Choose a backhoe that has an integrated tool carrier (ITC) or a quick coupler so that you can use multiple attachments.
- The loader must have both grouser shoes and rubber-padded shoes.
- Choose four-wheel drive (for improved traction on muddy ground) and four-wheel steering (for enhanced maneuverability) backhoes.
