Ride on lawn mowers have been around for quite some time now. I can remember when I was just a little kid and we moved up from the suburbs to a new place that was on acreage. Being so young at the time, I think from memory I was about 10 years old seeing this big brand-new ride on lawnmower was so cool.
Since that very day of having my first go on it I have never looked back. You know when you’re living in the city and you have a small block there really is no need for such a big machine. But when you start moving into the country or you have a house with a large block of land with a bit of acreage, then you are definitely going to need to get yourself a ride on.
So what do you get? There is quite a few different types or should we say styles of ride on mowers available in the marketplace today. The most basic and cheap ride on mower can be bought from such places as Wal-Mart or Bunnings. These machines are usually on the lower end of the quality scale and if you don’t have very much grass to take care of these will hold out quite well. But on the other hand if you do have a fair bit more lawn to mow or if you need to do it every weekend you’re going to need to get a better machine.
I guess the next step up from the residential machine would be to go into the commercial range equipment. Not only does the quality increase here but also the style of machine, you have more options.
So now you can start looking at what are called zero turn lawn mowers. These units are my personal favourite because they’re fun to drive and they can really cut down the grass a lot quicker than your standard non-zero turn mower.
The main common one hear is the machine that has the two leavers that you hang on to so that you can steer the machine left or right. These are pretty much like army tank controls, or skid steer bobcat type controls.
To make the mower go forward you would push both sticks together at once forward. And then to make it go backwards you would pull them backwards together at the same time. Turning left or right means that you have to push one stick forward and one stick backwards.
These machines that I’m talking about now will usually have the cutting deck underneath your seat or out front underneath your feet. There will also only be two main driving wheels one on the left side and one on the right side.
There is another type of the zero turn mower that has a steering wheel, an example is one of the Cub Cadet machines.
These machines have the ability to mow a lot more grass per hour per acre than your standard ride on mower. The ability to turn so sharply means you don’t have to keep going forwards, backwards, forwards, backwards to turn around a corner.
These things simply follow any contour around in the garden edging or around any tree, allowing for maximum cutting time or efficiency.
And finally after of the commercial range of lawnmowers you have the industrial range left. Here you step up again in quality features and comfort. Very large cutting widths are now available along with exceptional ground travel speed and cutting speed. The build quality of these units are the best of the best. They are literally designed to be run into the ground 24 hour per day. So if you need to mow full on each and every day for contracting or you own a national park these are the class of machine you need to look into.
There are so many different machines in the marketplace today, how are you going to know which one to get. Which models have larger cutting widths? Which machines can cut more grass per hour? Well you can take a look at this website ride on lawn mowers.
where we look at a whole range of different types of ride on mowers.
Simon has had a keen interest in these garden machines for years. Why don’t you check out his website over at http://www.rideonlawnmowers.net
Will a small Bobcat type loader with a bucket/backhoe dig through drought-solid Georgia clay dirt?
We had planned to some landscaping work around our house, levelling some areas and putting up brick retaining walls… but with the Southeast drought, the dirt is now solid as a brick.
Definitely too solid to do anything with regular shovels, and we would have rented a Bobcat or similar small backhoe anyway. But now we’re wondering whether even those things can break through the dirt. I know really large equipment can — they’re doing construction all around and they move and recontour huge tracts of dirt like it’s sand. But that kind of equipment is WAY out of our budget.
We like to do it ourselves, so we’ll rent equipment if it can do the job.
Does anyone out there have experience with this smaller consumer-rentable equipment (1500-2500 lbs) and with Southeast clay soil in very dry conditions? Will it do the job? Or should we wait until it rains?
We have about a 40×40 area to recontour about 4-8 ft high.
I have two Bobcats, a vintage 1968 38HP belt drive and a 120HP hydro. The hard clay around here is famous for brick making and the little guy will do anything the big boy will, just not as quickly. If your an experienced operator get the biggest the rental has, if not, rent the smallest machine with the smallest bucket they have. Even the small one will make quick work of your little project in a weekend. Start slow, these machines have a habit of destroying things (including people) in a flash so be very careful. If I’m cleaning out muddy corals over perma-type frost the tracks are a plus but on dry ground they’re an expensive no need. RScott
