When most people think about tie dye they probably think of some kids from the 60’s with flowers in their hair wearing tie dye shirts and chanting flower power. Tie dyeing is looked at by some to be too hippyish, but when done correctly tie dying can look amazing on anyone who wears it. It’s a shirt with a huge assortment of different colors that form crazy designs and can be made using any colors you would like. The best part is, you can do this at home and it isn’t hard. Interested in tie dying your own stuff but don’t know how? Read on!
The first thing you need to do when tie dyeing is gather supplies. You will of course need a white t-shirt. On top of this gather a few rubber bands, the dye you plan on using, rubber gloves, and optionally a fork and some soda ash. The soda ash isn’t required but is known to help make the shirt last longer. The fork is an optional tool you can use to help make the spiral process easier, but that comes later. If you want to save yourself some time and effort searching for the correct supplies, just find a tie dye kit at your local arts and crafts store.
Once you have all of your supplies, start by pre washing the t-shirt. This will remove anything unneeded and also bring it down to the right size. If you’re dying indoors, you should probably use something like garbage bags or newspaper on the surface your tie dying, as it can get messy. If you’re using soda ash rinse the shirt in the soda ash before you get started. The best way to do this is to get a big bowl or bucket and fill it with water/soda ash and then rinse it in there, but use gloves. Let the soda ash soak into the shirt from fifteen minutes to an hour.
When it comes to the actual tie dying, the way you go about putting the rubber bands on depends on how you want the design to look. If you’re going for the stripes effect, then turn your shirt into a tube like shape and put the rubber bands every inch or so on the tube. With each rubber band you add, you’ll be getting another stripe. If you want to make a spiral like center circle (here’s where the fork comes in), lay the shirt down flat on its surface and then stick a fork in the middle. Start spinning the fork and the shirt will come with it. Spin it until the shirt has spun up as much as possible, and then apply elastic bands all over it to hold that specific shape. Either way, you should now have a t-shirt formed into some awkward shape with elastics all over it.
Now take your fiber reactive dye and apply it in different colors to the different areas of the shirt, allowing the elastic bands to act as dividers from color to color (you should have your gloves on at this point). The dye must be prepared according to its instructions or it might not turn out properly. Apply the dye wherever you want because it’s going to look like a big diverse mess of colors anyways, so don’t feel afraid to draw outside the lines.
After you’re done applying the dye, let the dye set in for around eight hours. Letting it soak overnight is best. Wrap it in some plastic wrap to keep the moisture there as long as possible, as letting it dry out too fast will result in an improper chemical reaction and the shirt won’t look nearly as good. After you’ve waited eight hours, rinse out the die under cold water. Let it rinse until the water you see is clear. After this, put it in the washing machine (perhaps by itself to avoid the ink leaking over to other clothing) for a cycle. After this you’re good to go. Enjoy your new colorful shirt!

Can you put silverware into the washing machine?
I have a bucket of knives, spoons, forks and serving utensils that has been soaking in water for over a month (don’t ask) and now has it’s own ecosystem. I don’t have a dishwasher, and can’t bring myself to wash these by hand OR throw it out. What if I put an old towel into my washing machine and filled with hot water, dish detergent, and the grimy silverware, then put on the gentle cycle? Would I break the machine?
It wouldn’t break the machine, but it would ruin the enamel of the inside
and in time you would get rust stains on your wash. But if you throw you washer out after tumbling your silverware in it, then it’s OK
