Flood damage clean up
My community, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, experienced the worst flood of our lives last June. It was the worst flood in recorded history in this area. Not only did the water go beyond the FEMA maps’ 100 Year Flood Plain, but also beyond the 500 Year Flood Plain maps and then several blocks beyond both flood plains. Cedar Rapids is shaped like a salad bowl with flat land in all directions from the river and then going up hills in all directions. The water was so deep it was 18′ above flood stage in areas. The water destroyed the flat lands and homes in those areas in every direction. It was a horrific event that we are still trying to recover from.
The blessing in the clean-up is that groups from all over the country came to help us clean-up. Church groups and volunteer helper organizations along with the Red Cross and other disaster groups all showed up and went to work.
After the water receded, people were then allowed to re-enter their homes as they had been forbidden to after the evacuation for several days.
In whole neighborhoods, in many homes the water was as high as the ceilings on the first floor. At first, water had to be removed from the basements by pumps.
The water was a combination of oil, gas, feces and dozens of other kinds of contaminants. We were warned repeatedly about not even touching the water for fear of ingesting it in cuts or abrasions or in rashes. It smelled bad and it was bad.
Everything had to be thrown out in the houses. Everything that had been touched by water was filthy, greasy and stank from belongings to appliances, to all of the fixtures and drywall. The drywall had to be removed so many feet about the watermarks in order to be certain the flood water had not seeped into the porous materials.
People doing the clean-up were advised to wear gloves and protective clothing though wearing these things in July and August in Iowa would make them sweat to death.
Because it was hot and muggy during the clean-up months, disaster organizations drove the streets with bottled water for the volunteers and fed them regularly. My church put together snack packs for volunteers by the hundreds in order for the volunteers to get a sweet treat on their breaks.
The City and some companies with heavy equipment worked tirelessly removing mountains of garbage in front of the houses and taking it to the dumps. We still have some of the mountains to be picked up in certain neighborhoods where the volunteers have descended; the college kids from around the nation as well as church groups and other volunteers.
So many houses will be bulldozed because they are dangerous to enter. The contamination is serious and cannot be removed simply. There are properties that are inundated with mold and although mold mitigation is occurring widely, it is a terrible bio-hazard situation and could be deadly to allergy sufferers.
Among human disasters, floods have to be among the worst. In a tornado everything is broken and tossed around and then you clean it up. But with a flood, you try to save and clean up what can be saved. So much cannot be saved because of contamination and mold and so the long-term health risks can be devastating as well.
