A Crawler tractor or tracked vehicle is an equipment used for construction in which tracks is being used to replace the wheels. The tractor can apply force to the ground since it is the track who responsible for spreading the tractor’s weight over a bigger area. The navigation of the tractor over soft grounds such as mud, snow and soil are easier. The usability of the tractor is can be maximize by putting some attachments to the vehicle. The tractor becomes a bulldozer when a dozer blade is put in front of the vehicle. It becomes crawler loader when a load attachment is being connected to it.
The first to develop the crawler track mechanism is Alvin Lombard. He patented his design in 1901. Though the history of the tractor started even earlier than Lombard’s design, the problem with the earlier tractors is that the structure of their equipment was not even able to reach the stage of prototyping.
The tractor industry becomes popular when Benjamin Holt penetrated the industry. The Holt manufacturing industry has done hundreds or researches and experiment over the tractor’s system. The first crawler tractor was developed in 1906 after having lots of successful experiments and test. Aside from Albert Lombard’s design, David Roberts created his own design of crawler track. A patent of his design was produced in 1904 but this was never succeeded. In 1914, he traded his patent to Holt.
A crawler track has two major types, the Vickers suspension and Christie suspension. The Vickers suspensions make use of tiny return rollers which hold the track direct from the idler up to the driving wheel which makes the tracks seems like a D-shape sideways.
The Christie suspension makes use of huge road wheels, which makes the track lay over the wheels which creates a banana-like form.

When a crawler tractor, on tracks, moves over the ground, the “plates” on the tracks that are ON THE GROUND?
do not move until the back sprocket picks them up, one by one. If the bottom plates of the track are not moving in relation to the ground or in relation to the tractor, are the “plates” on top of the track moving twice as fast as the tractor?
The links on top (when traveling horizontally) do indeed move twice as fast on average as the vehicle. This has nothing to do with the size of the sprockets or the shape of the the track.
The way to see this is to sit in the tractor. If the drive sprockets are moving the tractor at 10 mph, the tractor is static in your frame of reference, the bottom of the track is moving back at 10mph and the top is moving forward at 10mph. All the track is firmly bolted together, it all has to go around at the same speed. Now, standing on the ground and watching, the bottom links look static, the top is moving at the 10mph you saw while in the tractor plus the 10mph the vehicle moves.
I said average speed in the first paragraph because the tracks are literally links of chain, thus, have minor changes in speed as each link goes on the drive sprocket because the sprocket is not quite round. This is called chordal action.
Similar to the tracked vehicle, on a wheeled vehicle, the road contact point is also static, and the exact top of the wheel also moves twice as fast as the vehicle. The axle moves at the vehicle speed.
