Learning the basics of propeller repair will come in very handy in an emergency situation. Propellers are usually damaged when they hit an obstacle. Experts believe that the boater must carry a spare propeller and replace the existing prop in an emergency. It is however, not advisable to repair the damaged propeller because this is a skilled job that is usually done by a trained technician. Boaters should learn to replace the propeller to bring the boat back to shore in an emergency.
When a propeller suddenly becomes slow or increases the consumption of fuel or is slow to come to plane, the prop is damaged or worn out and needs replacing. The tachometer will indicate the sudden drop in the speed of the propeller.
The advice of experts is that a plaster cast should be made of the prop for greater accuracy in repair. If the prop is dented after a rough sail, the plaster cast will help the boater to hammer the prop back to its original shape. Some propellers come with interchangeable blades that can be used in emergencies. Some manufacturers give a spare blade that can be fitted easily in emergency situations. The blades should be examined for damage like nicks and bends and these problems should be fixed by taking it to a technician or by using a hammer if the boater is comfortable with repairing the prop.
The hub of the prop should not slip. The end of the propeller housing and the hub should be in line. A slipping hub will affect propeller rotation and reduce the speed of the boat. Repairing a hub requires special tools used by certified technicians so it is best that the boater replaces the parts of the hub.
Another important aspect of propeller repair is propeller balance. This is also a task that should be performed by a certified technician. Proper propeller balance will reduce or eliminate vibration. Tuning the balance of a propeller is best done by a qualified technician for optimum performance. If the pitch of the prop is not balanced, it will jeopardize the performance of the prop and the engine.
When the prop hits and obstacle and the boat stalls, the old prop should be removed using a screwdriver to loosen the nut. The old prop should be removed and the emergency spare prop should be placed carefully by reversing the process by which the old prop was taken out. Replacing the prop should help to get the boat back to shore in an emergency before taking the prop to a technician for repair.
Repairing a boat propeller by oneself will save time and money. Certified technicians will do a better job because they will have the specialized tools required for the task. Once a propeller is professionally repaired, it will give hours of boating pleasure. A do it yourself job may result in frequent repairs and the boater will spend more money for repairs than a one time job by a specialist.

2000 dodge intrepid, can engine be replaced from a later model or better engine?
My mother in law bought a 2000 Intrepid and 3 days later the engine goes. We found out that the 2000 intrepid is notorious for engine problems/failure. I was wondering if it is even worth replacing or if it can be replaced with a different engine. I think the engine in it now is a 2.7 or something like that.
