Just about every machine in existence needs some type of lubrication to function correctly. Typically, it is the responsibility of the maintenance technician or machine operator to properly lubricate each point on a machine. A good preventive maintenance program is the base to increasing production, significantly reducing downtime and repair costs.
An auto lube system is an important part of a value-structured preventive maintenance program. These systems are designed to reduce the man hours spent on lubricating equipment so that time can be spent on other critical maintenance projects. Companies have discovered the value that these systems deliver and the benefits they provide.
Reduces Labor Hours
With manual lubrication, a machine will typically get lubed before or after a shift. One machine can take up to an hour to correctly grease. An auto lube system greases while the machine is in operation which adds at least one hour of production per day.
Lubricates While the Machine is Running
An automatic lube system provides consistent lubrication in small, precise amounts that are applied frequently. This consistent lubrication keeps a bearing coated and protects it from wear and contamination. In contrast, manual lubrication floods a bearing with a large amount of grease when applied then dissipates as the day progresses leading to the risk of contamination and premature wear.
Reduces Grease Consumption
Auto lube systems only pump the required amount of grease needed to each point as specified by the OEM. While the pump lubricates continuously, the amount of grease applied is very small for each lube cycle.
Increases Safety
Not every lube point is easy to reach. Manual lubrication usually means having to climb, crawl or reach to access the point(s) in question. If a point is hard to reach, then the possibility of the maintenance technician skipping that point increases. Using an auto lube system will eliminate the safety issues associated with manual lubrication.
Reduces Costs Associated with Part Replacement
If a machine has a bearing failure, the cost of fixing that machine is much more than the replacement cost of just the bearing. Other costs to consider are:
