Why Hip Hop Beat my sound or a song on a commercial CD?
Disclaimer # 1-LABEL
This article is not intended to diagnose or cure any sound of hip-hop or rap masterpiece, but intend to give ideas of possible areas of conflict view, and help you diagnose things so in the future from the point of engineering and support. Whoa!
Usually when an artist comes in our room, which could put in a groove hitting or demo CD, and the question appears again and again, "Yo Home Skillet, why my sound demo the mud, "or" How is that sound is not like a store bought CD? Disclaimer # 2 This article assumes that you produce music in a pleasant room with maybe some treatments (ie foam) on the walls, the use of real studio monitors, in other words, my brothers and sisters, I am assuming you can trust in the room and the monitors to tell you the truth. Nuff said! Forward.
Are you with me so far?
When you listen to your favorite rapper or hip-hop artist on the radio, you may feel is missing, Pop on the palms of hands or box and who are lovers of serious decline, right? Folk elements listen and think, "How to get a deep bass, deep kick and rational, "" how to juggle all the other frequencies I do not sound muddy. "
Are you ready for this?
Say you have a simple kick and clap beat, with a tight cap, low fat good, maybe some bell rings and flowers in the background. Do not touch the EQ at the moment.
1. I'll start my master set of balance in their place of detention.
2. Listening of 85 db, or if you have neighbors to keep happy, just go as hard as possible without damaging your ears or the monitors.
3. At its optimal level volume, start adjusting the sliders shots, or a trap once, add the hats. Go to a volume that makes those elements feel right. Very important!
4. Slip on the bass in the drum until it is straight. It is planned to start breathing at this time. That's what we feel again.
5. Write bells and sounds of keyboards. Who's going? You must feel at optimal volume. If you feel not good, something must change in the agreement.
6. At this point, allow me to be almost completely master to hear a sufficient level to see if you can still hear everything in the agreement. Also hearing anything that might be jumping into the mix. If it sounds good right now, Playa, its pretty cool.
7. Lets do the master fader to the optimal position. What season Work / mixer, hopefully EQ available, we 'll start with our bells. Now your first thought might be that the bells are acute right, we'll add a lot of high end EQ. Big no no! Instead, we will withdraw some or perhaps all the end dirty, dirty, under bells outside. In a sharp instrument such as bells, nothing really happens below 150 hertz, so roll man! While the track is playing take it easy and we'll start to roll with the low-cut filter or maybe your bass shelving knob until the ring begins to close. You may not need anything below 150 Hz You be the judge. Use your ears. If it sounds good, is good. I said you do not need anything below 150hertz, but go higher if you think it sounds good. If it is used a piano instead of bells, try the same thing. By removing the dirty mud, you are really cleaning up their sound. Can You Dig It?
You know you're ready for it!
You can try with the kick and snare, claps, and hats as well, just be careful and not too or will sound harsh and very painful to listen to. Can You Dig It? As serious as the sound of the bass, try cutting some of the really low garbage at the bottom first and then if needed a little help try boosting a little somewhere around 100 hertz to start. Remember, when it feels good, then it is correct.
I compression savings, speed, effects and constraints for a future article, meanwhile I hope this will help you get started in the right direction.
