Is it more efficient to have a fuel tank thats nearly full or rather empty?
I heard that if you always have a full or nearly full tank the car uses less fuel so you should always top up the cars fuel. However, wouldnt having a more empty tank (say 20% full) be more fuel efficient because its lighter?
Good question. The difference in weight is not enough to make a significant difference; you would save about a gallon out of every 300-400 gallons. However, the fuel pump in most vehiles is located inside the tank, and is cooled by the fuel around it. By running your car with less than a half tank, the fuel pump will burn out much faster than with a full tank. That’s about a $300 repair job or more. I usually fill up around the time i get to half a tank, to make the pump last longer, because like I said, you’re not going to see any change in fuel economy.
