Hydraulic cylinders are used in heavy machinery and engineering products that need great power to run. The mechanical efficiency IS the overall efficiency. But to have this you first have to have the Power entered in the piston (the surface of the piston>>Pi * r^2<< times the pressure--using the same inches, or millimeters the piston dimensions are given to you-- times also the "time" in SEC). So if the piston diameter or the radius is in inches, you utilize the PSI system, and if in millimeters utilize the N/mm^2.
Time is the one needed for the piston to do a certain movement to provide a work.
After this you should calculate the frictions inside the piston (between piston itself and the carcase, the friction of the pressure agent-->oil or treated water).
You subtract them from the power figure and then you make a ratio between the remaining result and the power input you have given it to the piston assembly.

What Bruzer said is not true because you cannot make a ratio between two separate things and get a ” =1″ result. That’s impossible also because you get parameters “in the air” like the surface of the piston (which forms the Force along with the pressure inside the piston).
