Do I have to bring my car to the dealership for its 30k mile service or can i go to a garage of my choice?

I drive a 2007 Hyundai Elantra and its due for the 30,000 mile service. I’ve taken it to the dealership for the oil changes and tire rotations and winter cleaning (something about the salt they put on the road getting into the brakes). But at the last oil change, the estimate for the 30k mile service was around $500. Do I have to “man up” and just go to the dealership or can I go to the garage of my choosing? Somebody told me that I HAVE to take it to Hyundai because of the special parts they replace and the way the car is built. If I don’t take it to Hyundai, is the cost going to be significantly less?

You are free to take the car to the mechanic of your own choosing. The dealership can not legally require you to have any maintenance done at the dealership as a condition of warranty coverage. Repairs covered under warranty must be done at the dealership, but repairs and maintenance that you are paying for can be done anywhere.

As long as you have records showing the work was done, you are covered under the warranty. You can have your oil changes, and 30,000 mile service done anywhere, and most likely it will cost a lot less than the dealer.

Do not believe anything about special parts. If a shop needs a part, they can buy it from a parts store, or from the dealer parts department. Shops buy from the dealership every day.
