Forklifts are basically lift trucks equipped with heavy load carriage frame to elevate goods in a vertical direction specially designed for industrial uses. These industrial trucks are powered either by electric motors, diesel or LPG (Liquefied petroleum gas) fuels. Generally they have an internal combustion engine. These heavy machines specifically made for power lifting sound like exhausting a good amount of gases that is harmful to environment and human health as well.
Emission of carbon monoxide
Forklift trucks, while using in an enclosed area or inside a building space may create a great amount of carbon monoxide which is harmful in all aspects. LPG powered forklift trucks generally emit considerably less amount of carbon monoxide than compared to others. LPG forklifts which are actually propane powered represent more than 60% of such trucks. However, LPG forklift trucks do emit excessive carbon monoxide gas when they are not maintained properly or when they are used in areas that have inadequate ventilation. When inhaled, this colorless and odorless gas causes serious health problem. It obstructs blood’s ability to carry out oxygen. It even mixes with hemoglobin in the red blood cells and forms carboxyhemoglobin which in turn causes hypoxic stress. This again may further damage cardiovascular function in a human health that already has cardiovascular disease.
Undesired emissions
When a person’s carboxyhemoglobin increases to 50%, he may loose his consciousness and this may further result in death of the person. So, whoever is related to such machines with such emissions is a potential one to serious health problems. But can these trucks be avoided because of the undesired emissions when they are so valuable in industrial use? Obviously, not! So why not work on the emission control levels? It’s better to check the emission levels of these trucks time to time so that they meet the standard emission levels rather than to disuse them.
Battery operated forklift trucks
The battery operated forklift trucks eliminate this serious issue. But as they are pretty expensive to buy maintain and also their work performance is pretty slow compared to other fuel powered trucks they are sometime less preferred. Moreover their engines have limited horsepower and hardly can meet eight hours duty span at a stress. Compared to gasoline and propane operated forklift trucks, diesel powered trucks emit significantly less amount of carbon monoxide. But the diesel ones generate some harmful constituents. Out of them, a few are suspicious to cause cancer.
There is one good solution to decrease emission norms of these power trucks. Installing a catalytic converter is sure to reduce carbon monoxide levels up to 90%. Fuel emission controllers can be installed in the engines that deliver a defined fuel mixture. This may further reduce carbon monoxide level and even improves fuel consumption.
Propane additives can be considered to improve carburetor performance along with engine functions. Propane additives are also helpful to reduce CO emissions up to 60%. Periodic engine tune ups must be performed in all the forklift trucks. By doing so, 0.5% to 1% carbon monoxide can be discharged from the engine. Forklift trucks’ emission control levels should be met the standards. Drivers of such trucks also must take responsibility to ensure that their driving techniques are proper and according to certified guidelines. They should minimize warm up time for such powerful engines, avoid cold starts, minimize idling time, and avoid unreasonable accelerating and braking, and also unnecessarily racing the engine.
