The principles for enabling children to become fully proficient multilinguals through schooling are well known. Even so, most indigenous/tribal, minority and marginalised children are not provided with appropriate mother-tongue-based multilingual education (MLE) that would enable them to succeed in school and society. In this book experts from around the world ask why this is, and show how it can …

World Cup 2010 Group G – will we see the first defending Brazilians

BRAZIL
Goalkeepers: Julio Cesar (Inter Milan), Doni (AS Roma), Gomes (Tottenham Hotspur)
Defenders: Maicon (Inter Milan), Daniel Alves (Barcelona), Michel Bastos (Olympique Lyon), Gilberto (Cruzeiro), Lucio (Inter Milan), Juan (AS Roma), Luisao (Benfica), Thiago Silva (AC Milan)
Midfielders: Gilberto Silva (Panathinaikos), Felipe Melo (Juventus), Ramires (Benfica), Elano (Galatasaray), Kaka (Real Madrid), Julio Baptista (Roma), Kleberson (Flamengo), Josue (VfL Wolfsburg).
Forwards: Robinho (Santos), Luis Fabiano (Sevilla), Nilmar (Villarreal), Grafite (VfL Wolfsburg)
Comment: Lots of negative words have been said for selection of Dunga for the coming World Cup – most prominently why Ronalinho, Adriano and Pato  are missing. But it is clear that the first two will only disrupt the harmony, while the 3rd has been plagued with injuries and still have the future in front of him – there is no need to push in to decide a World Cup in such a tender age. Dunga has been an inteligent player in the past, and he it is clearly shown in his selection. It will be the keeper and the defense that can win a World Cup (like Inter in the Champions League), and with Cesar between the posts, and Lucio and Juan in front of him the Brazilians look solid rock. Just add Maicon, Kaka and Robinho and you will get a flamboyant team. Once again Brazil will be the heavy favourites for winning the title.

PORTUGAL
Goalkeepers: Eduardo (Braga), Daniel Fernandes (Iraklis), Beto (Porto).
Defenders: Miguel (Valencia), Paulo Ferreira (Chelsea), Pepe (Real Madrid), Ricardo Carvalho (Chelsea), Bruno Alves (Porto), Rolando (Porto), Ricardo Costa (Lille), Fabio Coentrao (Benfica).
Midfielders: Pedro Mendes (Sporting), Duda (Malaga), Ze Castro (Deportivo Coruna), Tiago (Atletico Madrid), Deco (Chelsea), Raul Meireles (Porto), Miguel Veloso (Sporting).
Forwards: Simao Sabrosa (Atletico Madrid), Danny (Zenit St Petersburg), Liedson (Sporting), Hugo Almeida (Werder Bremen), Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid), Nani (Manchester United).
Comment: Portugal have lots of followers because of Ronaldo, but let’s face it – this team is not a world class. This nation has never had a stable keeper and defense at least for two decades now, and without that you cannot win a major title. Cravalho is OK, but when you compare the line with that of Brazil or Italy you get the idea. Let alone that, but Ronaldo cannot play like Rooney alone on the top. And there is noone to assist him apart from the inexperienced with the national team Liedson. To sum up, a good achievement for the side will be to pass the group comfortably.

IVORY COAST
Goalkeepers: Vincent Angban (ASEC Abidjan), Boubacar Barry (Lokeren), Aristides Zogbo (Maccabi Netanya), Daniel Yeboah (ASEC Abidjan).
Defenders: Souleymane Bamba (Hibernian), Arthur Boka (VfB Stuttgart), Benjamin Brou Angoua (Valenciennes), Guy Demel (Hamburg SV), Emmanuel Eboue (Arsenal), Abdoulaye Meite (West Bromwich Albion), Steve Gohouri (Wigan Athletic), Siaka Tiene (Valenciennes), Kolo Toure (Manchester City).
Midfielders: Emerse Fae (Nantes), Jean-Jacques Gosso Gosso (Monaco), Abdelkader Keita (Galatasaray), Emmanuel Kone (International Curtea Arges), Gervais Yao Kouassi (Lille), Christian Koffi Ndri (Sevilla), Cheik Ismael Tiote (Twente Enschede), Yaya Toure (Barcelona), Gilles Yapi Yapo (Young Boys Berne), Didier Zokora (Sevilla).
Forwards: Kanga Akale (Racing Lens), Aruna Dindane (Racing Lens), Seydou Doumbia (Young Boys Berne), Didier Drogba (Chelsea), Salomon Kalou (Chelsea), Bakary Kone (Olympique Marseille)
Comment: Ivory Coast played bad at CAN 2010 and it was only natural that they took a new coach – Sven Goran Eriksson. The guy has always coached teams with some of the best players around, and the Ivorians do not make a difference. The forwards does not need to be commented. Zokora, Toure and Romaric in the midfield have the guts and power to challenge even the mighty Brazilians. The department, where Sven Goran will have the hardest work is to train the team to defend. Toure and Demel are world class players, but he will need 2 more defenders, at least a decent keeper and work as a unit if he wants the Ivorians to be the pleasant surprise at this World Cup. A difficult task for the Swedish.

KOREA DPR
Kim Myong Gil (Amrokgang), Kim Myong Won (Amrokgang), Ri Myong Guk (Pyongyang City), An Chol Hyok (Rimyongsu), An Yong Hak (Omiya Ardija), Cha Jong Hyok (Amrokgang), Choe Kum Chol (April 25), Hong Yong Jo (FK Rostov), Ji Yun Nam (April 25), Jong Tae Se (Kawasaki Frontale), Kim Kum Il (April 25), Kim Kyong Il (Rimyongsu), Kim Yong Jun (Pyongyang City), Mun In Guk (April 25), Nam Song Chol (April 25), Pak Chol Jin (Amrokgang), Pak Nam Chol (April 25), Pak Nam Chol (Amrokgang), Pak Sung Hyok (Sobaeksu), Ri Chol Myong (Pyongyang City), Ri Jun Il (Sobaeksu), Ri Kwang Chon (April 25), Ri Kwang Hyok (Koynggongop)
Comment: Even the most fanatic fans of Korea will find it difficult to write a preview for them in English. The team is the major enigma on this tournament. They should have been preparing for this the last 6 months and in terms of physical strength will be one of the better teams. Their tactical knowledge is unknown, but as Japan and South Korea has elaborated their football skills, it should not surprise you if Korea DPR stay well even against the best teams in the world. Adding that the Asians are always working as a unit (especially if they are Communist), you will get the idea that North Korea is not the team to bet against (not at the available odds at least).
