Over-the-road truck driving has always been considered to be a man’s job. Let’s face it, big rigs are so large that sometimes smaller women can barely reach the pedals or see over the steering wheel. Times and trucks have changed, so more people are encouraging women to consider trucking as a career.

Women in Trucking (WIT) is a nationally-known, non-profit organization that was created to encourage women to join the trucking industry. They promote a female-friendly environment, but also allow women to have a voice in the industry in order to reduce the obstacles they face. The organization attempts to promote their members’ accomplishments as they seek to succeed in a male-dominated industry.

Lady Truck Drivers (LTD) is website that is dedicated to women truck drivers. They provide a Ladies Talk Forum as a way to support women drivers and help them deal with the frustrations of working in the industry. They encourage women to look for trucking companies that value women drivers and will treat them with the respect they deserve.

The American Trucking Association (ATA) reports that women only now make up 4.5 percent of the truck drivers in the country. However, that number continues to increase as more women enter the industry.

While it’s true that more women are joining the trucking industry as drivers, those aren’t the only positions that a woman could do. Have you ever wanted to work as a mechanic on a big rig? You can do it, along with being a dispatcher or safety director. In fact, any position in the trucking industry that a man can do, you can do, too!

There are a number of websites online that can explain more about how you can learn to become a truck driver or another industry position. If you are seriously interested, you can do some research to find out which are the best trucking schools and the companies that are women-friendly. Any of the organizations already listed here would be good places to start.

If you’re a young lady interested in truck driving as a career, finding a woman driver to be a mentor would be a great idea. Not only would she be able to encourage you, she would be able to tell you the best places to apply for a job, what to expect, and give you advice when you’re ready to start out.

The trucking industry is one that women have been struggling to make in-roads, however it seems their time has come. With the shortage of drivers in the country, now would be a great time to encourage any woman considering trucking as a career. Not only will they be providing a much needed workforce, they will be fulfilling a dream, so it’s a win-win situation.

mow she told me for the most part that it did and after that she said she will call me tues or wens now i went home and my status change from active to on file and the position chande from pakage handler to loader/unloader now what that mean do u think i got the job or is it normal for the status to change like that

It sounds like you got a job, just not the job you expected. They seem to want you to load and unload the trucks. This wouldn’t be so different from package handler and perhaps it’s just a matter of semantics. Hey, it sounds to me like you’re going to be getting a regular paycheck.
