The Whirlpool made direct drive washers which include the Kenmore, Roper, Estate and Kitchen Aid, are washers that don’t use a belt. In other words, these washers couple their motors to the transmissions using a motor coupler.
If at the end of the cycle, you notice that washer drain the water out, but it didn’t spin dry the clothes, do the following to see if the washer has a broken motor coupler.
Set the timer on the regular cycle and turn the washer on, let it fill and when the motor starts take a look to see if the washer is agitating. If the washer is not agitating and is not spinning, most likely the
motor coupler is broken. Another way to thell that is broken is by the noise it makes when the motor won’t start.
Replacing a motor coupler could cost about 120 dollars, if you do it yourself it could be under 30 dollars.
To replace the motor coupler you will need to remove the washer cabinet, the pump and the motor. It is not a hard job to do, but it is harder to try to explain how to do it with words. You could get yourself a manual or a video on how to replace the motor coupler.
Or if you don’t want to do it yourself, you could get a repair company to take care of replacing the motor coupler for you.
Most washer are worth having the motor coupler replace because a new washer could cost you 400 dollars or more.
If you get your washer repaired, you need to be careful with the loads that you put in the washer. Most motor coupler failures are cause by overloading the washers. So if you want your washer to last you a long time, don’t overload it.

Take it to a good train shop in your area. If you don’t have one get a copy of Model Railroader and check the advertisers section. Over the years I’ve learned that children are into hard play with their trains. I was one until I learned that you can have just as much fun weathering and setting up dioramas and scenes.
