It is difficult to compare players of different eras in any sport. In cricket, it is no different. To judge the best wicketkeeper of all time in cricket is a bit difficult. The modern wicketkeeper has to field fewer bouncers and has better equipment. More importantly, the expectations of wicket keepers have changed as well.
It is no longer required to have the best person with the gloves behind the stumps. Cricket teams only require competent glove-wielders who are just as good in front of the stumps. The modern wicketkeeper has to be an all-rounder. The best wicketkeepers should not merely be the best wicketkeeper/batsmen, but those who excelled in front of the stumps consistently.
Some of the best wicketkeepers who no longer play the game include Alan Knott, Jeff Dujon, Ian Healy and Rod Marsh. Other wicketkeepers worthy of mention include Adam Gilchrist and Alec Stewart. Contemporary glove-men in cricket tend to be less proficient or consistent behind the stumps. However, the best modern wicketkeepers are Kumar Sangakkara and Mahendra Singh Dhoni. They are competent with the gloves, but better batsmen than their predecessors were.
Alan Knott
Knott was renowned for his agility behind the stumps. Despite his average height, he was able to make stunning catches- even in front of first slip. His glove-work was consistent and very reliable- as was his batting.
Jeff Dujon
As part of the champion West Indies team with a pace quartet, Dujon rarely had his skills tested with slow bowling. However, he was agile and quick behind the stumps. He grabbed most of the many catching opportunities that came his way and saved many extras behind the stumps. His keeping to fast bowling was tangibly above par. Dujon was no slouch with the bat even- averaging over thirty. He had the third-highest dismissals (all-time) for wicketkeepers in Test matches.
Ian Healy
With the highest number of Test match dismissals, Ian Healy can lay claim to being one of the best of all time. He was adept at keeping to both fast bowlers and spinners. He kept wicket to the greatest leg-break/googly bowler- Shane Warne. It was his keeping to Warne that set him apart from other wicketkeepers and fetched him many dismissals in the process.
Rod Marsh
Ian Healy took the mantle from Rod Marsh, but Marsh was the trendsetter for wicketkeepers. He was nimble and agile- necessary qualities for keeping wicket when Jeff Thompson and Dennis Lillee were bowling.
To modern cricket followers, Adam Gilchrist may seem like the best wicketkeeper in cricket history. However, it is more appropriate to state that Gilchrist is the best wicketkeeper/batsman. Ian Healy was a better wicketkeeper than Gilchrist even. Ian Healy, Rod Marsh and Jeff Dujon- incidentally the keepers with the most Test match dismissals- can lay claim to being the best wicketkeepers in cricket.
