Mercruiser 350 oil pan needs to be replaced, can I use a automotive oil pan?
I have a 2001 Mercruiser 350 MAG MPI in my boat. In the beginning of the summer the engine threw a rod and I got the engine block replace. Apparently the repair shop patched the oil pan instead of replace int and now it is leaking. Being a marine engine the parts are 2x-4x more expensive then automotive parts My question is can I replace it with an automotive oil pan? Is there a difference between the automotive and marine oil pans?

The block was replaced about 2 months ago. The repair shop told be there was residual oil left in the bilge from when the engine threw the rod and punctured the oil pan. Turns out that they reused the existing oil pan and it has been leaking since they repaired it. So now I need to replace the oil pan and I’m trying to save a couple bucks.
Good question. The real issue is getting the correct one. The dipstick (boss) can be either right or left, and my memory is that auto engine pans with the correct location are hard to find. However, if you got a new block or re-manufactured, you might need a different pan than the factory original. I’ve installed a bunch of “new” Mercruiser engines and always ordered them with the pan’s (long block) just for that very reason. Mercruiser, OMC, and Volvo all used different pans on the 5.7 (350) GM blocks but occasionally we would order the right pan only to discover it wouldn’t fit. There are some differences in auto and marine. I remember something about a baffle in some models…….
I guess take the one you have off and make sure it fits your new block, then go looking.
