The megamonster of Mexico with 19 millions of inhabitants mired in horrific traffic jams and smog, from which people protect themselves with masks. And nevertheless, any novelty here stands on a solid foundation of traditions, both Spanish and Native American (Mesoamerican). Best of all you can feel it at the central city square Plaza Zocalo in Mexico.
Early in the morning it is pleasant to take a walk on this vast lonely square, adorned with a giant pole with the Mexican national flag. According to an Indian myth the god of the sun Huitzilopochtli told the Aztecs to settle down in the place where they would meet an eagle sitting on a cactus with a snake in its beak. After long wandering Indians managed to find the area in Mexico which fully matched the description, given by the god. Thus, in the XIV century Tenochtitlan was founded in Mexico.
There are a lot of very interesting historical sites on the square itself, first of all this is Catedral Metropolitana. This oldest Catholic temple in Latin America and in Mexico began to be built in 1573 upon the project of an architect Claudio de Arciniega. On the weekends there crowd Indian quacks and dancers – “conceros” at the church fence, performing archaic ritual dances, moreover both of them are surely devoted Catholics. Rumor followed by historians believed for long time that the Cathedral was built on the place of main Aztec temple in Mexico. But people and experts were wrong. Tempo Mayor – the main temple complex of Tenochtitlan was discovered accidentally at the abandoned edge of Zocalo.

The coat of arms.
Its design is based on the symbol used by the Mexicas to discover the land where they would found Tenochtitlan. Legend has it that they traveled from Aztlán, present-day Nayarit, in search of a sign from Huitzilopochtli to tell them where to settle and establish their empire.
This symbol was an “eagle perched upon a nopal, devouring a serpent”. After a long journey, they finally found it in the Valley of Mexico, on an island near the edge of Lake Anáhuac.
The national coat-of-arms therefore reproduces the sign given to the Aztecs by Huitzilopochtli: the left profile of the eagle standing on its left leg upon a nopal; in its right talon and beak it holds a rattle snake, which represented the renovation of life to the ancient Mexicas.
If you look closely, you will see that the island is bordered by a ribbon with colored bands: green represents hope and victory, white symbolizes the purity of our ideals, and red if for the blood our national heroes shed. On the island, there is a nopal with red fruit or tunas, which for the Aztecs, symbolized human hearts.
If we look further down, we will see a garland (an open crown of branches or flowers); the left side bears oak branches symbolizing strength, while the right side is decorated with the laurel branches of victory.
