As long as there have been athletes and organized military there have been push-ups. Push up have been recorded as far back as Roman emperor Constantine, but had been around far before the Roman Empire. Push-ups have been around so long nobody can give credit to the inventor.
So why should we care? In our age of modern technology we can get a better upper body workout with myriad of expensive machines on the market… right? Wrong! The push-up has been around for thousands of years, because it’s a damn near perfect exercise.
It portable, just need you body, it works several muscle groups, back, arms, chest, and yes even the abs, it’s for any fitness level, you can change resistance from low (push-ups from your knees) to high (elevate your feet on a chair), it versatile by placing your hands closer or farther apart, you change the muscle group your working hardest, and of course, it is cheap.. Like I said all you need is your body.
I have to admit, I’m one of the millions that had totally discounted the push-up, thinking a gym, weights, or a machine is what I needed to “sculpt” my flabby 52 year old body. After getting a kick in the head from a workout program I started that uses push-ups and pull-ups as the core. It wasn’t long before I realized that push-ups weren’t outdated, just forgotten… click your heels and say “there’s no exercise like pushups, there’s no exercise like push-ups” yep the power to develop a great body had been there all along.
The big difference between a good ‘ol push-up and a machine, is the isolation of muscle. All machine based exercises isolate one muscle or muscle group, and when you complete exercising that the one muscle, you move on to the next muscle. When you do a bench press on your ‘bow thingy’, you isolate only pecs, but with a push-up, you have to use your abs to maintain the straight line from your shoulders to you heels, your shoulders to support your weight, and the biceps, and triceps to keep balanced and create motion… I would put my 90 day transformation up against any “bow thingy” success story. And my investment was way less – no fancy equipment needed.
I had a program that laid out a good routine for me… but if you want to do it yourself you can. Just keep in mind alternate upper body workout, cardio workout (run, plyo, whatever) and lower body workout. Never work the same muscle group 2 days in a row. Your muscle needs recovery time to get best results.
And yes, the push-up does not work out my lower body… that’s why you also need to dust off squats, lunges, and toe raises… funny thing they cost you nothing as well. Gravity, your body and 2000 year-old plus exercises, can achieve outstanding results.
Of course if you are like me, you may want to get help with detailing the specifics of your push up workout. That’s why I like the Beachbody PX90 program. I get a systematic program that takes the pain of planning a workout off of me. I follow the program and get great results.

Whyy do guys always push me around and tease me?
During school there are tons of guys that are constantly pushing me around and making jokes about me. They aren’t mean or anythingg i just dont know why they do it.
same problem i have but like i just learn to ignore it. They can say whatever they want it wont make them any cooler. This one guy always made fun of me but if you look at our personalities i have a social life with good grades (except math but like im in advanced math so like it harder and hes in the same class and he is doing any better well a little better but not much) he doesn’t have as big a social life as i do but he does have good grades. He was jealous, those guys are just jealous ignore them or talk to your parents if it starts bugging you. Let them say whatever they want you’re going to be the better person for NOT stooping to their level and for ignoring them. Good Luck and remember what might be the oldest phrase, sticks and stones, sticks and stones. And who knows maybe they do like you. Just ignore them it will always work even if it doesn’t seem like it.
