Rand Asphalt

Pre-boomers had lots of things to play with when we was growing up. Many of them were home-made or inexpensive. But it seemed that we had one item that cost more than the others. This may have a bike or a wagon for the boys. For girls, the prized possession was more likely to be a fancy doll house or it could be a bicycle as well. What ever your favorite was, chances are you took pretty good care of it. But some of the things we liked are no longer around. Ever wonder why?

Remember the handcart that looked somewhat like a tricycle with two front wheels instead of one? However, there were some versions with only one front wheel. To propel this tiny vehicle, the rider pulled the handle back and forth rather than using pedals. It was called an Irish Mail (fashioned after an adult version used by mail carriers in Ireland) and was popular with our parents’ generation, and ours to a lesser degree, before fading from the scene soon after the War.

How about the pedal cars, which were also a hold over from our parents’ youth. These came in a variety of vehicle categories from cars and trucks to fire engines and tractors to planes and boats. I had a fire engine as a pre-schooler. It was red with white trim and had little ladders hanging on each side and a step in the back for another rider. The only problems occurred when the rider jumped on without a driver in the front; this caused the back end hit the ground as did the rider. There was no government agency looking out for child safety in those days.

Clamp-on roller skates were popular with both boys and girls for those of us born between 1930 and 1945. These skates were adjustable in length and width so kids could get several years of use out of them or could be shared with siblings, which made for some interesting negotiations within the households with several children. The skates had metal wheels and the better ones used ball bearings and ran smoother over the concrete sidewalks or the asphalt streets. All of them had leather straps which went around the ankle, which often rubbed the skin until it was sore, and buckled on the side.

The famous skate key was the way to tighten the clamps on the front to the shoe. Because the clamp did not hold unless it was affixed tightly to the sole of the shoe (sneakers were useless here), moms did not allow kids to wear their good shoes when skating. A skater could easily be identified in school because of the scoffed toes and sole with indentations plus patches on the knees and elbows. Shoe skates emerged with the advent of the roller rinks after WWII and were the precursor to the modern inline skates of today. I loved skating. Did you? Have you done it lately?

There are other toys and sports items that have vanished except for antique store, retro restaurants and Internet sites. Can you remember your favorites? Share your memories with other New Seniors, especially you ladies. If you have a picture of the item send it along too. We could all use a trip down memory lane where everything is good.

Don Potter, a Philadelphia native, was born in 1936 and is a 50 year veteran of the advertising agency business. Now living in Los Angeles, he has written two novels in retirement, frequently writes on marketing issues, and has a blog dedicated to pre-boomers (those born between 1930 and 1945).
