Rebuilt engine?
I am looking at a jeep Cherokee that has 200,000 miles on it but the guy said that he rebuilt the engine and that only has 25,000 miles on it. what are the risks of buying that jeep? how much does the 200 thousand miles effect the jeep? Please no stupid answers and you know if its stupid so just stop. I also would like to know how you would know the answer please.
A compression test would be a good start. I would also want to see receipts for the parts used in the rebuild, and for any machine shop work done on the engine. The rest of the Jeep still has 200,000 miles, so ask if the transmission has been serviced and make sure it shifts out well. The differentials and transfer case should be quiet and leak free. Listen for any noises in the front suspension. It could need CV axles, ball joints, tie rod ends, wheel bearings, and many other parts that wear out on high mileage cars. If all checks out, then the car has been very well maintained. Fortunately, most Cherokees were used as soccer mom cars and rarely saw hard off-road use. If it shows signs of rough treatment, avoid it. There are too many other barely-used ones to take a chance on an abused one.
