Modern vehicle manufacturing has come a long way, in terms of automation. Increasingly many items are assembled by computer-controlled equipment, in contrast with the manual assembly that featured so extensively in car assembly plants of previous decades.
But manufacturers still have to design essential components with compromise in mind. A major production run of a popular car will be producing cars for a wide variety of international markets, each with its own particular climate and geography. One obvious example is that US-made vehicles have traditionally featured softer suspension, to suit the long, straight roads of that country, while in Europe we are much more in need of a car that is set up to handle bendy roads.
The same is equally true when it comes to engines. These are normally set up to perform within a range of parameters, but for the manufacturer it is essential that the vehicle performs reliably and delivers at the least the output claimed. This is particularly so in the case of diesel engine tuning. Across different markets, the engine will need to perform despite receiving fuel of differing quality, and being driven in differing climatic conditions through the seasons.
An individual vehicle will also be driven quite differently depending on its owner’s pattern of use; one car may work only in stop-start urban situations, while the next off the production line could be employed on long distance motorway trips.
With diesel engines in particular, manufacturers play safe in the way they set up vehicles, and it is possible to exploit this situation with a diesel tuning box. These clever after-market pieces of equipment simply fit in the engine bay, delivering a revised set of instructions to the diesel engine that deliver improved performance and efficiency.
With diesel chip tuning, it is possible to set up the tuning box to specifically improve fuel economy; alternatively, it is possible to set up the system to enhance diesel engine performance, increasing power and torque. With the increasing cost of fuel, many fleet managers are now considering using diesel tuning to improve the fuel efficiency of both cars and vans and so reduce costs. In this business environment, a diesel tuning box can provide a quick investment payback.
Is there a rwd manual transmission that fits a 94 buick park avenue supercharged?
I own a 76 cosworth vega and plan on swapping the 122ci 4 cylinder for a 3.8 buick supercharged. The car already has an upgraded suspension and 3″ dual exaust from when i had a 350 in it. Im planing on swapping the engines this summer when I paint the car but am unsure of what transmission if any will fit the 3800 series 2 engine and can handle the 320 hp it puts out. I believe the manual 5 speed camaro transmission off an 96 v6 also with the 3800 series 2 will fit, and my car has the 3.73 gears that the transmission is set up for. Can anyone tell me if the 96 3.8L camaro transmission will bolt up to the engine or anything else that will.
Dingy is right. The bell housing mount bolts are quite possibly different. Although chevrolet did use a 3.8 I don’t think it si the same block the “BOP” people used. which would mean you need an adapter which any high performance shop should have or be able to get for you at a nominal fee. but you will have to figure motor mounts out because they weren’t mounted like standard rear wheel drivers were. Good luck otherwise that will be a sweet ride.
