Help me understand brake fluids; DOT4, J1703a, J1703?
I have an Audi 100GL 1974 which according to manual requires brake fluid following “SAE J1703a” standard. Seems all modern fluids are named DOT4 etc. I got a DOT4 fluid stating to comply with SAE J1703 (doesnt mention J1703a).
The brakes are a bit soggy (have been even before adding new fluid) so I’d like to know if theres any real life difference between J1703a and J1703.

if the brake lines are a bit soggy replace them you ahve a leak and you can use either dot 3 or dot 4 brake fuild but when you repalce the brake lines you will need a few bottles of brake fuild to do it cause you will have to bleed the whole system it is best to have it done by a pro
