The density of compacted Asphalt is around 2000kg/m^3 (it varies based on the formulation of the asphalt – ask your supplier for the real value)
1 square yard @ 2″ thick is: 36 * 36 * 2 = 2592 in^3
1 inch is 2.54 cm or .0254 m, so 1 in^3 is 16.38 cm^3 or 1.638 x 10^-5 m^3
So, to figure out how many cubic meters we have:
2592 * 1.638 x 10^-5 = .0424 m^3
Now we know that we have .0424 cubic meters of asphalt, so we just need to multiply by the density of the asphalt:
.0424 * 2000 = 84.95 kg
Converting kg to lbs: 84.95 * 2.20 = 186 lbs
Or around 1/10 of a ton.
