Any tips on loading a head-shy horse onto a trailer?
My horse had hit his head on the top of my trailer a year and a half ago. He does not remember the incident. The past year he has been loading fine. The other day he just did not want to get on and it was completely out of the norm for his behavior. He also has a bad habit of rocketing out of the trailer and hitting his head on every rib of the trailer. Please any suggestions would be apperciated!!

First of all…YES your horse does remember the incident. Its been proven over and over again at how elaborate a horses memory is through numerous studies….horses have the longest term memory of any mammal. Just because he is fine for a while doesnt mean he doesnt remember what happened.
Secondly – it sounds to me that your horse is not necessarily head shy. Head shy is when a horse doesnt like their face, ears, head touched AT ALL. Whether it be in the trailer or just during grooming. Your horse has a loading problem. Again…just because he is good for a while doesnt mean anything. Horses interpret things much differently than you and I as Iam sure you are aware. What you need to do is keep working on the ground with him and do some trailering sessions. If he has a habit of rocketing out of the trailer…then he is having some issues within the walls of the trailer which lead me to beleive that YES he remembers his bad incident and he is feeling a big closterphobic. Which horses are by nature. SO – First things first, you need to protect his head. Put a head bumper on so he doesnt kill himself in there…if he has a habit of rocketting back out of the trailer and hitting his head on every rib of the trailer on the way out, he can be doing alot of damage and could potentially hurt himself immensely. Second lesson – start working with him slowly in there. Get him to walk on and walk off – even if its one step…turn him around and walk away (this is when you are releasing pressure). Then try again. Get him to the point where he will stand nicely in the trailer – quiet – with neutral ears and body language. Really learn about his body language because he can tell you more than you think. The basics? If his head is high, above the withers ..he is upset and seemingly uncomfortable. If his head is low, he is sniffing the trailer, touching it with his nose, willingly stepping on – he is becomming / is more comfortable. So – just keep doing sessions with him and help him with this fear issue. DONT FORGET to put a head bumper on either – protecting him as much as you can is most important.
