It always seems like music supervisors are searching. While a great deal of the searching is music oriented, it seems like the majority of the time is spent seeking the other things that are the most crucial for making placements possible.
I’ve compiled a list of a few of these things so that you, as a musician, can make the searching process easier on a music supervisor that may be looking to license your tracks.
1. Instrumental versions – Not every placement is going to need vocals, actually a good majority of spots are not going to want your vocals. Vocals, especially dominant ones, can be too overbearing in certain situations (voiceovers, dialogue, etc.), but the other characteristics of the song may be perfect for a spot.
If needed, a music supervisor will usually go straight to the artist’s record label or manager for instrumental versions. To make this process easier, make sure these versions are easily accessible and in the hands of the right people. I would even suggest including the instrumentals with any press kit or any other press materials you send out.
2. Publishing information – Music supervisors are responsible for negotiating deals between their clients and the copyright owners of the music they’re trying to license and the publishing information is a necessity in order to fully accomplish this sometimes daunting task. The publishing company associated with the tracks, the writers and their splits, and other owners of the copyright are usually the things that music supervisors are looking for. Finding this information can often times turn into a long and arduous task, but the deal cannot go on without the proper information.
Again, a simple solution to this problem is to make this information available and easily accessible. You don’t have to have it plastered front and center on the home page of your website, but it might be good to included it on a separate page (or maybe even a hidden page created specifically for music supervisors). This is also something that should most certainly be included with your any of your press kits and materials
3. Rates – The negotiation process consists mainly of finding a price that each party can agree on. What makes this process difficult is the fact that there is no flat rate for a specific placement-every song and every artist has a different price tag. Music supervisors are usually given a budget and are expected to find songs that fit within that budget. A good music supervisor can usually tell what songs will fit into what price range judging by the popularity of the song/band and what other spots the song has occupied.
This information does not have to be publicly available, but having your music on sites that make the music licensing process streamlined is usually very helpful to music supervisors. These types of sites will often used for a general search and can sometimes lead to promising results for some artists. I would recommend selecting a few of your best and most film/TV friendly tracks and uploading them to these types of services with flat rates and useful and descriptive tags that accurately describe the music. Here are a few sites I’ve found:
Affixmusic.com (urban and hip/hop music)
Hank.tv (indie labels)
Rumblefish.com
Pumpaudio.com
These are just a few things you can do to make your music more attractive to music supervisors. Do you have any other suggestions?
