Post Oaks (Quercus stellata) are stout, dense, tough trees that have adapted to climates from the Edwards Plateau in Texas to New England. They don’t transplant well, so when you have one you know it is a native, having survived for decades, even centuries. Also known as Iron Oak, Cross Oak, Rough Oak, and Box Oak, the tree plainly has been recognized for its durability. But suburban living has proven to be the weak point of the species. Long adapted to forest settings, the trees now face landscaping, sprinkler systems, loss of their preferred food source, construction, and soil compaction.
The damage usually begins with construction. Even when nobody accidentally gashes the trunk with a bumper, cuts a trench near the trunk, or breaks off a limb with a forklift, the root zone suffers compaction because of the heavy traffic involved. Invariably, at some point during construction the soil gets wet, causing even more compaction when trucks and equipment drive through. Loss of air spaces in the soil means loss of roots, as well as reduced ability of the tree to regenerate lost roots in the now-dense-as-concrete soil. A common misconception is that the root zone is a mirror image of the canopy, with a deep taproot filling a bowl the size of the leafy parts. In fact, tree roots will seek the path of least resistance and fill any hospitable crevice. This generally means a wide, shallow mat at least twice as wide as the canopy with a few deep anchors. The roots that take in water and nutrients generally grow in the top six to twenty-four inches of soil, but compaction reduces that depth to maybe three to twelve inches. It is somewhat surprising that the trees survive construction as often as they do. The nearer the trees are to the construction process, the more likely they will show some canopy loss in the next two to five years.
Construction often means grade changes, as well. Soil is scraped away in some places, removing all those surface roots, and added to others, putting the surface so far away that deep roots die from lack of oxygen. Wells or islands sometimes attempt to mitigate this, but often the protected area is inadequate to allow much more than bare survival of the tree, making it vulnerable to any additional stresses that may arise in the future. Next, a layer of sod is applied, again raising the surface level and putting a sponge between the tree and any moisture that may come from above. Then all leaf litter and fallen branches get scooped up and hauled away before they can decay and feed the soil. Yet still many trees survive.
The final blow is often a result of what should be a beneficial factor. Sprinkler systems are installed. A trencher is often the tool of choice, and some installers are more sensitive to saving tree roots than others. Still, automatic sprinklers can be a boon if installed correctly and maintained consistently. The problem comes when timers are set for lots of water in the Summer, then left that way all year. Or, when a watering head or pipe gets broken and goes unnoticed. Or some new design feature prevents rainwater from draining properly. One way or another, the soil ends up staying wet. This is hard for most trees, but Post Oaks especially cannot tolerate wet feet for long. Root diseases weaken the tree and it quickly declines and dies.
So, how can you protect Post Oaks in your yard? The path to a happy tree is through its roots. Create an area around the base of the trees that has no grass, and mulch this area heavily (2″ to 3″ deep) with organic material, especially compost that boosts microbial life in the soil. The more lawn area you can spare, the happier the tree will be. Spot plantings of bedding plants may help you nurse the loss of the grassy carpet. Avoid adding soil to the root zone if possible, and add thin layers over time if you must add anything. Make sure your soil dries out somewhat between watering sessions; most people find plants do better with more water, less often. Every five days should be adequate even in the summer.
Water early in the morning. If your soil absorbs water slowly, you may need to do a few short bursts spaced out with breaks, but make sure the water gets down deep (dig a 6″ to 8″ hole). If your yard has been on a more frequent cycle, you may need to taper off gradually. Then check to make sure the soil is not saturated before running the sprinklers again. If an area seems constantly wet for no apparent reason, have a sprinkler repair company come to check for underground leaks or other problems. Don’t forget to turn off the sprinklers when there is significant rain (or add a rain sensor to automate the process). In extreme cases, it may be necessary to aerate compacted soil. Fertilizer is an obvious thing to try, but a soil test is recommended before choosing a product. Adding more of a nutrient that is already plentiful can do more harm than good.
