Anyone in the construction industry knows that a skid steer vehicle can work wonders on a construction site, but many construction companies are being penny wise and pound foolish by not investing in attachments and therefore, not being able to use their skid steer loader to it’s full potential. Here’s how to double the usefulness and productive of skid steer vehicles.
The key to increasing the productivity of the lowly skid steer workhorse is to use different attachments with the vehicle. I know attachments are not cheap, but in many parts of the country several contractors have an arrangement where they each own one or two attachments and then rent or lend them to other contractors. This arrangement gives all members of the group access to several attachments without the expense of buying all of the attachments.
Of course, it’s not a perfect arrangement. For example, everyone in the group may need the snowblower or the snow blade right after a big snow storm, but most of the time the arrangement works great. Let’s take a look at some of the attachments other than the conventional bucket and see what can be done with them.
The 20 attachments to consider to make your skid steer loader more productive
#1. Snowblower attachment – It’s obvious what you can do with this tool.
#2. Snow blade – This can be used instead of a snowblower.
#3. Backhhoe – This is a very productive use of a skidsteer.
#4. Pallet forks – In addition to using it to move pallets, other things can be lifted and moved also.
#5. Angle broom – Quickly clean up a construction site.
#6. Sweeper – Same as the angle broom, clean up the site, finish the job and get paid.
#7. An auger – This unusual attachment can be worth it’s weight in gold in some jobs.
#8. Mower – No need to buy a mower that you won’t use much. Do the job with this attachment.
#9. Stump grinder – This is a better way to get rid of stumps.
#10. Tree spade – You can plant trees fast with this attachment.
#11. Trencher – Most construction sites need this attachment for a few hours.
#12. Dumping hopper – There are times this would come in handy.
#13. Ripper – When you need it, you need it.
#14. Tillers – Great for landscaping work.
#15. Grapple – Not used often, but when you need it, this is a useful attachment.
#16. Hydraulic breaker – You probably never thought of using a skid steer this way.
#17. Wheel saw – This can save a lot of time and money.
#18. Cement mixer – What site doesn’t need a cement mixer for a few days?
#19. Wood chipper – This can be a less expensive option than hauling limbs away.
#20. Roller – Good for site prep work and sometimes useful in landscaping work.
Bottom line: Consider investing in a few attachments and then setting up an arrangement with other contractors in your area to share attachments (rent or lend) and watch the productivity of your skid steer vehicle double or even triple.
