If you have to remove a tree from your yard it is a step-by-step process which doesn’t necessarily require experience but you do need to know what to do. Eliminating the stump is usually the most difficult part of tree removal. Using a stump grinder is sometimes easier than trying other methods like salting the stump.
Cost
Removing the last and most difficult piece of a tree might cost a bit. Professional landscapers usually charge according to the size of the stump. Renting equipment generally will run about $100-$150 for the removal of a 24 inch stump. You can rent gas-powered machines for about $100-$200 a day, depending on the size of the machine. So, if you only have one or two stumps to remove it might be economically wiser to just hire a professional. If you have more than two stumps or want to share the rental machine with a neighbor, renting is probably the best way to go.
When renting machinery make sure the dealer explains how to use the equipment in detail. Check the controls and make sure you fully understand how to safely operate the machine. Above all else, make sure it works before you take it home!
How To Use the Stump Grinder
1. Use a chainsaw to cut as much of the stump off as you safely can.
2. Get to know the parts of the tree stump grinder and read the directions on how to operate the model you are using. Understand the basics of the machine. The control panel is where you will find the ignition and the controls for operation. Locate the blade that chops the stump and the hydraulic lever that raises and moves the grinder wheel.
3. Remove all possible hazards from your work space to avoid possible physical injury or damages to the wheels.
4. Situate the grinder directly in front of the stump. Raise the grinder wheel a few inches above the stump but stay close to the edge of it. Use the grinder wheel to position the grinder and lower it on to the stump. Move the machine side to side to remove wood chips and continue the process until the stump is removed.

how do i even out the ground after cutting down a tree?
we recently cut down about 8 trees in our back yard and had a stump grinder come in and grind the stumps down to about 6 inchs under the level of the grass. how do i even out the ground around where the stump used to be and get rid of all the wood chips he left behind? he also took out the exposed roots on a steep hill, any tips for filling in those holes?
We ended up putting sod on ours and you’d never know they cut down any trees.
