Adam Sandler and crew remake The Longest Yard a Burt Reynolds classic from 1974. And as with most re-makes from the seventies much of the social commentary that made The Longest Yard so important to its time has been removed from this latest incarnation. However, Sandler fans won’t be disappointed as the Adam Sandler they know and love has returned. Gone is the warm and fuzziness he displayed in Spanglish and in its place is the crude, trash talking, and gratuitously violent Sandler that made him famous and incredibly wealthy. The supporting cast is no less vulgar or crude yet despite that and the rampant misogyny, homophobia and racial and southern stereotypes the movie was funny and enjoyable.
The Longest Yard tells the story of John “Wrecking” Crewe a former all star quarterback who is booted from the league amidst a scandal that accuses him of point shaving and a federal plea deal that places him on probation for his role in the price fixing debacle. After his shameful dismissal from the league, Crewe has become a kept man and his girlfriend (Courtney Cox) tries his patience when she wants him to don a sailor suit to a party she’s hosting at his home. So instead of wearing the outfit he goes for a joy ride in her very expensive car that involves a six pack and a police chase that lands him in a Texas state prison to serve out the remainder of his probation.
Predictably, the prison is run by a sadistic warden whose corrections officers are semi pro football players in the state prison guard football league. He wants Crewe to help him tune up his boys so they can win the championship that has alluded them for some years. Crewe says what they need is a warm up game and offers, with some assistance, to train the inmates for a tune up game that is supposed to happen before the prison league season starts. What really can I say? The script was mediocre, the acting was okay and Chris Rock was funny as hell, that about sums it up.
The movie itself is pretty underwhelming. It’s predictable and without any of the sweeping social commentary that made the 1974 film so compelling it just ends up being a testosterone driven vehicle that will appeal to young males for its violence and the pro athletes that make an appearance and will appeal to young women because many of the men in the film are some of the finest specimens that this world has to offer. I won’t say save your money because the movie is entertaining. I will say that if you live in a state where a movie can run at the ten dollar mark then wait for it to come out on DVD. You’ll still have a good time and you can save you a little cash.
